The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware

What to say about this book...I guess the first thing that comes to mind is that its "pop fiction"...the cover is everywhere, so on some level I read it because I wanted to know what all the fuss was about.  I don't know why I do that-it hardly ever works out.  But I feel like I can't really disparage a book until I have read it.  For example, I heard so much about those vampire books (wait, I'll remember in a second what they were called...Bella and her vampire, set I think in Seattle, big, big, big movie, people rave about the books I found them borderline terrible...I read the first one and probably would have rated it a "Don't Bother"...what the heck...I'll have to google it...ah yes, Twilight..dreadful) that I had to read them...mistake...I read the first one and vowed never to read another one nor to ever see the movies.

This book reminded me a little of Girl on a Train...and I'd say it was way better.  It also brought to mind the old mystery novels that I used to read when I was a kid which were way out of my age range but, because I was such a precocious reader and it was hard to keep me in books, I read anyway, and which partially set me on the path of reader-for-life- like the Moon Spinners and other books of that ilk-  Wikipedia has a great description within Mary Steward's section describing "the romantic mystery genre, featuring smart, adventurous heroines who could hold their own in dangerous situations".  I LOVED these type books as a girl-I devoured them.  I'd read them full length in paperback or hardback or truncated in Reader's Digest, whatever I could get my hands on.

The Woman in Cabin 10 should have been right up my alley.  And in some ways it was...but I thought it was a little contrived and I was just a little bit short of sympathetic for the main character.  Her relationship with her boyfriend was weakly depicted, her work responsibilities seemed to not be much a priority for her even though she was on a work sponsored trip, and well, that all seems dumb when I see it written here but seriously, it sorta bugged me.  On the other hand, I did not get bored, I thought that there were enough plot twists to keep me entertained and the end was satisfying enough.  I gave this book a #4 Liked It.  I don't think anyone would be sorry they read it, but I doubt I would ever give it another go.  I could be way off on this so I'll probably pick up another Ruth Ware book at some point just to see...
